Hoop Dream

a dream catcher for cassie pena

Cassie asked me to make her a dream catcher, to make her "hoop dream," something that was about her, and her dream.  So we got to work.  She brought me personal items:  a ring from her grandmother, braids of her hair, a gift of antlers from a friend, a slice of agate.  We talked about her feelings, inspirations, favorite colors, places, things, people and made a spiritual inventory to work from.
I started work on her dream catcher with a ceremony, a ceremony of smoke, fire and purification.  The hoop dream came alive with neon and copper, agate and memoir, capsules of personage and dream.

a future glimpse of the recent past...

All of these pieces are made of Elk and Cactus. The Elk was hunted, skinned and tanned by my Great Uncle Frank, and the Cholla Cacti were gathered by me in the northeastern part of the Sonoran Desert.

These photos were taken by my friend, Djakhangir Zakhidov. These pieces are surely now scattered and well worn. All have been sold some time ago, but worth a memory.
